Broker's Comments

Built in 1909 by W. E. Thomas in Falmouth, UK, on a Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter hull, (but made sleeker and narrower to suit her intended purpose as a Gentleman’s Yacht), this 62′ classic cutter (47′ without bowsprit), is an amazing piece of sailing history. She recently underwent an extensive refit to the highest standards and has been consistently updated.

On the original wax papers (included in the sale) she was commissioned by Mr. Buckley Haed, permanent address: Garrick Club London, occupation: ‘Gentlemen’. The Garrick Club, was founded as a private gentleman's club in 1831 in the heart of London’s West End Theatreland. It has the most extensive theatrical and artistic drawings in existence in the world.

She is rigged with a topmast, has a carvel hull of pitch pine on oak frames and was originally fitted with a BMC 44kw diesel engine. Her current engine is a 2013, 75hp Beta with just 40 hours on her since refurbishment in 2022.

This beautiful yacht is on the UK Historic Ship Register, and following her refit was the runner up in the 2021 National Historic Ship Photograph competition. In June 2021 she was award best newcomer by the Old Gaffers Association at the Yarmouth Regatta. She also sailed in the iconic ‘Round the Island Race’ and ‘Cowes Classics Week’. During Cowes, when running full sail on a downwind start alongside the famous Suhaili, Sir Robert Knox-Johnston hailed the current owner and commented "beautiful boat".

A quirky later addition was a larger bar/galley with a brass foot stand which was reclaimed while cruising the West Coast of from the whisky island Oban. This has created nice warm place to enjoy a glass of wine or a ‘wee dram’ under the glass snowdrop lights in the lovely wooden interior. The current owner has also sympathetically added a marble backed Dickinson Diesel heater further adding to the charm and ambiance of the interior.

A classic yacht surveyor was appointed by the current owner from purchase and has been involved throughout the refit. A recent survey will be available shortly.

Currently lying in Vilamoura, Algarve under professional guardianship.
