Broker's Comments
The Post Boat is a traditional design Gaff-Sloop (with bowsprit) with dark blue, moulded GRP hull with covered foredeck and pale cream cockpit with internal well for outboard engine. Built by
Character Boats in Lancashire, its design is based on a boat used to deliver the mail to outlying villages in the Ullapool region on west coast of Scotland in the late 19th century. As a consequence it has a wide beam of 6ft-8in and a draught of 1ft-8in plus a long shallow fixed keel and bilge runners (with substantial protective metal bands) which make the craft easy and practicable to beach without harm. The boat has rigid full buoyancy built into the hull and the sturdy design provides
much more stability and ruggedness than similar size centreboard craft while being easy to launch and retrieve. This makes it ideal for family or solo cruising in coastal or estuary environments (as well as lakes and broads)
The sails are tan (slab reef for mainsail and furling gear for foresail) and the fittings are to the manufacturer's 'classic' specification with laid hardwood decking with curved coaming and polished bronze deck fittings eg. a bronze mainsheet horse, hardwood gunwale with rope fender below and a stemhead roller for anchor and chain; all in the manner of a 'gentleman's dayboat'. Very much a craft that you sit in rather than sit upon! Foredeck with waterproof locker plus two cockpit and one stern locker
The trailer has a fully galvanised chassis with manual winch and easy low loading self-aligning guide rollers. The shape of the bow and long sloping keel enables the craft to slide easily into the trailer cradle. There is minimal need for personal lifting or any great physical strength. The trailer tows easily behind a typical family car of c 2000cc. The two wheels (plus spare) have heavy duty 6ply tyres. Detachable tiller and rudder for road journeys.
Additional equipment includes new boat cover (2014), diaphragm bilge pump (manual), pair of 10ft oars (with fixed stowing bracket), cruising anchor and chain, wheel clamp and hitch lock for trailer security.
This is an elegant and attractive boat which always draws admiring glances and sustained interest from onlookers and is only now for sale (one careful owner) with considerable regret, due to bad knees.
